“We choose to go…not because [it is] easy, but because [it is] hard, because that goal will serve to measure and organize the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win.” –
John F. Kennedy on sending a man to the moon
Pretty solid challenge? You bet!
Clearly defined by the goal and time… not to mention ambitious… maybe even beyond
ambitious?
The truth is, you too can have your own “moon landing” breakthrough with your
golf game.
The human body is a perfect metaphor for understanding the importance of a challenge.
Your brain and body are designed to adapt and respond to the demands you place upon it. The
stronger the demand, the bigger the response.
Muscles keep growing and get stronger through the Principle of Progressive Resistance.
The more you challenge your mind, the sharper you become… there are even ‘brain gyms’
online you can join to keep your mind sharp.
If you want to lower your score, as I know you do, you need to challenge yourself.
As an example, if you lift the same amount of weight each time you workout, you keep your
muscles in a comfort zone and don’t provide the stimulus required to adapt and grow.
Another example is going to the range every day and just hitting balls with no clear goal or
challenge.
And like the moon mission, you won’t just go from blast off to stepping on the moon in one
day or even one month. No…
Give yourself time. Choose an ambitious goal and then set a timeline to achieve it.
Even worse than mindless practice or using the same weights every workout is…
quitting
All gains become losses over time, as I learned the hard way when I quit golf for roughly
10 years.
WE ALL NEED intellectual, spiritual, relational, sales, physical, and any type of
performance challenge that stretches us, forces us to overcome adversity, tests our character
and commitment, and inspires us to move forward and say goodbye to our comfort
zone.
Will your finest hour come from challenging yourself or from sitting on your couch?
Do you really think change will materialize without challenging yourself?
Push yourself to your limits, test your perseverance, experience the success and failures and
rise to the occasion.
In short, for a person, company, or a country to become great, they must seek out and rise
to the greatest challenges they set for themselves or those that are thrust upon them.
A brand new week is here… set ambitious goals… challenge yourself in a BIG WAY… raise
the stakes higher and UNLEASH YOUR GREATNESS.
