Chris here today and you know what’s cool? Bullwinkle. But seriously, Bullwinkle is just partly cool… what’s the coolest?
Crushing your drives… or long irons, and leaving yourself a shorter approach shot.I think the Fonz would agree.
Distance off the tee really is the key to lowering your score. Scoring well is made more difficult when you are forced to hit longer irons into every green.
There’s no better feeling than out-driving Rich with my 3-wood and he’s using his driver. He simply can’t stand it and fails to acknowledge my driving superiority.
I remember this past summer playing with Rich and I never hit a driver once the entire round. I made it a point to let him know it was just my baby 3 wood dominating his giant driver. Rich simply responded by blowing cigar smoke in my face every opportunity he had.
One key to more distance is to hit it straight. Sounds simple enough, but sometimes I lose control of my driver which sends me backpacking into the woods. That can be dangerous down here where poisonous snakes love the rough and woods.
When my drives start spraying all over, it is usually because my takeaway has sped up.
A fast takeaway kills my natural tempo leading to inconsistency.
Worse, when I speed up I’ll snatch the club head back and bring it too far on the inside. This is a death sentence for your driver.
I want you to give this drill a try and the driving range today or this week and write me and let me know if it helped you.
Head Cover Drill
Problem: Your drives aren’t finding the fairway as often as they should.
Solution: Slow down the takeaway to generate a better natural tempo.
- Grab your Bullwinkle head cover and put it on your driver or 3-wood.
- Now practice your takeaway and stop where your hands are outside of your thigh and the club starts to move up.
- Focus on generating a one-piece takeaway.
- Practice the takeaway 10 to 15 times with the head cover on.
- Remove the head cover and replicate the one-piece and in control takeaway.
- Find a nice pace to move the club back, where you are in control.
Now, the club will feel lighter and the club will move effortlessly along the proper path.
When I’m banging out 300 yard 3-woods, I feel like I’m swinging in control, swinging easy, and swinging loose.. even with a bit of cigar smoke in the eyes. Don’t forget to write in and let me know how this drill works for you.Talk soon,

PS. Look for pictures and an email tomorrow about our Toys for Tots drive. I’ll be heading to the local wally world with my son after he gets out of school.
