Variety is the spice of life, and so it should be with your workout program. Almost daily, I am asked what the best exercise for a golfers core is for golfers. To be honest, there isn’t ONE…
…there are many you should be using. Most importantly, I think you should build in exercises to help strengthen and protect your back. Playing golf with a bad back is almost impossible and you and I both know it makes for a miserable existence.
You need a combination of progressive exercises to strengthen your core and protect your back.
Progressions are a tool I use in every workout I design. Generally, I start you out with the most basic of movements and add balance, weight, and a variety of other changes to keep your body moving forward.
Granted, you need to be able to perform the exercise in good form before you move to the next exercise in the food chain.
If you want to play golf the rest of your life, like most of us do, you need to value the muscles that most people refer to as the ‘core’.
There is one thing that can help make that a reality…
The Ab Wheel.
Adding an ab wheel will also remove any boredom you may find in your current workouts… ab wheels are also extremely challenging!
I generally see the one-wheeled version. While this one is pretty good, it is my own personal opinion that two ab wheels are better (more is always better right???).
Ab Wheels don’t need to be expensive.. in fact, here’s all you need to build two Ab Wheels at home (one for each hand):
[ ] (4) 6″ Plastic Wheel, 1/2″ diameter hub
[ ] (4) 1/2″ Nylon Lock Nut
[ ] (2) 1/2″ x 12″ Threaded Rod
[ ] (2) 1/2″ x 6″ Nipple
Assemble in following order:
- Place nipple over the threaded rod
- Add a wheel to each side of the rod
- Center the handle and screw on the lock nuts
Pretty easy!
