Playing under pressure can make you a champion or a choker… and there is no in-between.
The 2015 Masters was tremendous… albeit, rather boring to watch. Jordan Spieth led from day 1 and never let go. His shaky moments weren’t really that shaky and he recovered nicely.
Jordan came home with all the marbles so to speak, and Golf Digest even predicts he will TRIPLE his yearly income with winning the Masters.
Pressure comes from within for the most part… but it can also be affected by sources outside of our own mind. Television, crowds, and the thought of what can go wrong, or what might be can really muck things up.
Luckily, Mr. Spieth (is he old enough to be a Mister yet?) was prepared.
Years and years of junior tournaments, playing with big names, and being in contention prepared him for the 2015 Masters… and yes, he got a little taste of pressure last year too… where he made some critical mistakes that allowed Bubba to win it all.
Ups and downs.
“I’d rather have a lot of talent and a little experience than a lot of experience and a little talent.” ~ John Wooden
I think this quote sums up Jordan’s last two Masters, don’t you think? The first he had zero experience at the tournament… this year he had experience and a taste of what might have been.
Last year Jordan got his experience… and he’s loaded with as much talent as a young Tiger Woods. Now anything is possible and I think we may be catching a glimpse of the NEXT Tiger Woods… and I’ve not said that about any golfer before… not even Rory.
What did I learn from Jordan Spieth?
How to be competitive and win with class.
During the round, he congratulated Justin Rose on great shots… and he kept his own composure and confidence. He made confident swings and sound decisions. These are all things WE can do as golfers and competitors.
I don’t really think the “Big Break Mentality” of talking trash makes you any better… it may make you feel better about yourself… but you also look like an incredible ass in this Gentlemen’s game of golf (maybe that’s why I can’t stand that show?).
What better ambassador for young golfers than Jordan Spieth?
I’m impressed and you should be too.
