Can you imagine Obi-Wan Kenobi handing Luke Skywalker his light-saber and saying, “figure it out kid”?
That’s essentially what every golfer does when they take it upon themselves to learn the game of golf without professional guidance. The funny thing is, a driver is probably more difficult to use than a light-saber… although, I’ve never owned a light-saber.
Allow me to shed light on a little secret: all of the best golfers in the world…have both a personal trainer AND a golf coach.
The best coaches have coaches too. This goes for the top bodybuilders to the best competitive golfers at your club, to mini-tour players, and at the PGA tour level.
In fact, I can name 15 of the top golfers in the world, and tell you that each of these golfers has a trainer or coach for one aspect of their game or another. The golfers that don’t have both are NOT in the top 10 on the tour…
Which brings me around to the main subject of this article: I have a trainer AND a golf coach.
More often than not, this surprises people. Obviously, I am asked, “why would an expert on fitness and golf – who’s designed highly successful workout programs AND golf game improvement systems – hire someone else to train and coach him?”
This question does not just apply to me, of course. Why would any of the top golfers and top golf coaches in the world decide to hire other coaches?
First, it’s really hard to be objective with yourself.
The main reason for hiring expert coaches for both fitness and golf instruction is simple (“I want better results”), and there’s a bunch of third and fourth reasons as well. And I’ll talk about each of them shortly.
I think everyone can use a coach; every person can benefit from coaching.
Whether that is for your job, your business, your golf game, your fitness, everyone can benefit from having an extra set of expert eyes guiding and instructing them.
So… why did I hire coaches?
This is pretty hard for me to talk about… but let’s get real. REALLY real.
For a long time, my golf game was in the crapper. I was a former assistant who took time off from golf to work my way up the corporate ladder. My golf game sucked, to the point where I pretty much hated playing golf.
It got so bad I started to skip playing altogether… and the spiral continued. I even let my health go and gained over 40 pounds of lard. My driving distance plummeted and my score skyrocketed.
Ever since high school, I was in excellent athletic condition with low body fat. Looking in the mirror and looking at my scorecards was brutal. Being so out of shape that it impacted my golf game so bad was rough. Looking in the mirror was pretty rough also…
I knew I had to put an end to the downward spiral… but how?
What had caused me to spin out of control? A career change (from the game of golf) to working for a giant ass of a boss was tough enough… I was surrounded by people who didn’t value health like I did and they began to rub off on me. I was also tied to a cell phone in case of emergency.
I also had a child on the way and needed this job to give him a life that the salary of an assistant pro couldn’t afford.
I guess the long and short of it is that somewhere along the way, golf and health became burdens more than outlets. They became chores instead of priorities. Naturally, things spun out of control and led to scores in the 90’s and a waist size bigger than the equators.
After two years of this, I decided I needed to turn things around.
This eventually led me down the path to gain my three fitness certifications and researching golf fitness and where I am today.
However, getting to where I am now wasn’t easy.
Accountability and guidance is what I required from a personal trainer to get my health in order… and I needed the accountability and guidance of a professional golfer to correct my game.
This pretty much decided the issue for me. I needed a coach. First, to get my health in check for more than just golf – but to avoid the risk of heart disease, cancers, and diabetes. I wanted to be around a long time to enjoy seeing my son grow up and mature into a man.
Since I really didn’t know where to turn, I decided to walk into a gym (any gym) and talk to a trainer and hire them on the spot. No research at all, just get the ball rolling. So I did.
This is when I met Cam. I hired him for an initial set of session that lasted two or three months – and then I began to see the advantages versus training myself alone.
Certainly, my results were much better than they had ever been training alone. The truth is, training with someone else’s workout programming brought the intensity to a whole new level. Not just because it’s good programming, but because someone else was doing the hard part: thinking.
When I was designing my own workouts, I had to think. Because I was splitting attention between thinking and training – I couldn’t give 100% effort to the workouts I created. By having Cam design the workouts and supervise me, I was able to just show up and WORK.
I was able to focus on training as hard as possible to regain my glory days. Essentially, I was able to turn my brain off for an hour. Talk about a sense of stress relief… this was it.
I would arrive at the gym, turn my mind off, and push myself to my limits.
This made every session with Cam more productive than in a very long time.
Now, this only worked for me because I trusted Cam completely. Cam knew what he was doing and had a lot of experience. He listened to my goals and designed a program that fit my like a glove.
It was this trust in Cam that allowed me to trust what he was telling me, and buy in. Buying in is key to success. You have to trust your trainers expertise in order to get the most from them. This is why you should hire someone elite, who has gotten results for people in your situation; and the credibility.
The same goes for hiring a golf coach. While the story above is my personal story, Rich (our Director of Instruction at GolfAgressive.com) has similar ones about golf mentors who helped him become a scratch golfer… ultimately, giving him the ability to earn a college scholarship for golf – affording him a first class education.
Further, Rich still gets lessons (as do I) on a regular basis. We often coach each other when we are playing rounds together. As we live in different cities now, this is a bit hard to do – so we rely on our local pro’s for a second set of eyes and coaching.
So yes, I believe that everyone should have coaches – even if it’s only for a short time.
No matter what industry or category, coaches – great coaches – have a way of bringing out the best of you and taking you to the next level.
You see, simply entering into a relationship with a coach brings immediate benefits… allowing you, the person being coached, to progress simply by the advantages below:
- Expertise
- Accountability
- Friendship
- Caring
- Motivation
These are just some of the benefits you will receive from having a coach. I think just about anyone can benefit from having a coach.
Coaches understand this the most, and it’s a good reason that many PGA professionals, competitive golfers, and even fitness professionals are enrolled in my online coaching program.
Here’s an update from our coaching client Jason and his personal account of this progress under our coaching…
Jason is just one of the many people Rich and I have coached in our last Single Digit System Coaching Program.
And now, RIch and I could not be more excited to announce that we want to help the next group – and we have just 8 spots available.
Just last week, Rich and I made even more improvements to our program that are soon to be released. Not only has every aspect been fine tuned and improved in some way, we’ve also streamlined the new system.
Most importantly… our coaching clients have not only added distance to every club in their bag – they have also gotten into better shape. Our new refinements should make it easier to get results… as well as make it more effective.
So, I want you to first ask yourself the following question…
Are you the type of person who can benefit from coaching?
Maybe. If any of these apply, then it’s a yes.
- You’re trying to break through to the next level (I want to break 90, 80, or even 70)
- You lack motivation to stick with any program…
- You don’t know what to do exactly to achieve your goals…
- You can’t figure out why you aren’t progressing like you want, even though you are working hard…
- Your weight is affecting your golf game and want to get in shape while improving your score at the same time…
If any of these apply, then you could benefit from letting Rich and I take the reigns.
Rich and I can’t wait to help you get results… and get to the next level, as we’ve helped Jason… and as Cam helped me.
If you allow us to leverage our knowledge; if you allow Rich and I to motivate you; if you allow us to develop a relationship that bonds us in a common cause – consider what YOU can accomplish with our guidance.
Consider Rich and I’s track record. Consider our success. Consider our methods.
Consider investing in yourself.
Then… consider the alternative.
Isn’t it time you got what you’ve been working towards?
Let’s do this. As a TEAM. Let’s do this Together.

Oh, if you were curious about Jason’s progress so far… he went from driving the ball 262 yards to driving the ball 289 yards in 4 weeks. This means he is now hitting 8-irons into greens instead of 5-irons – in just 4 weeks.
So how’s this report card for progress? Pretty solid results, and he’s still got two weeks left in this current phase of the Single Digit System.
Now of course, Jason isn’t the only person to be achieving results like this. There’s Ron Griffin who is seeing amazing results in his score and his body. He even get’s a few odd looks at work from some of the drills we have him doing…
