One night during jiujitsu class I was schooled by a black belt on how to escape the mount… and you may be wondering what jiujitsu has to do golf.
Quite a bit actually… both are art forms in their own right. Let me explain…
Sometimes there are invisible things you don’t see and aren’t taught that have a huge impact on the outcome of your swing or jiujitsu. Much like a master painter working on a masterpiece… it’s the things you don’t see that make the painting a masterpiece.
The black belt showed me one tiny tweak to make… almost invisible to the untrained eye. The result? Magical, powerful, and unstoppable.
Golf is no different… there are many “secrets” master golfers employ that the average golfer isn’t even aware of. These secrets are the finishing touches to solid foundations that make Tour Pro’s and scratch golfers swings so magical, powerful, and unstoppable.
I’m going to reveal one such “invisible” tweak you can make to your swing for booming drives… a tweak your playing partners won’t notice unless they are master PGA teaching professionals or accomplished golfers.
The tweak begins with a simple adjustment of your spine angle at address. For Maximal Distance from your driver there is nothing more important than your spine angle.
If you want to hit high launching shots with low spin, you need the proper spine angle. In fact, this change will improve the overall driver strike as well as swing speed.
Your swing must be striking the ball on an upswing AFTER the club reaches the bottom of your swing arc. So how do you do this?
Simple, just alter your setup position.
Take a look at all of the great drivers of the ball and you will see this trait in common. In fact, I was getting a touch up lesson from my friend Brent “The Golf Whisperer” is a stickler about my driver setup and this point in particular..
… and for most of my irons I usually employ relatively flat shoulders… but for the driver I add this “invisible” touch. It’s made a huge difference in my accuracy and has reduced ‘spin’ so that I find my ball closer to the center of the fairway.
2 Steps for Longer Drives
- Address the ball normally. “Hello Mr. Ball, let’s go for a ride!“
- Now, instead of looking at the ball normally, look up in the sky above your target landing zone. You should notice your right shoulder dip down below your left shoulder. Your spine angle should also tilt slightly to the right and away from the target.
.
This is the exact position you want for the driver strike. In fact, you should notice better accuracy as well, because the upstrike will reduce the downspin on the ball helping it to fly straighter.
Switch between your normal address and this new tilted driver address and note the differences. Rich and I would love to hear from you on our Facebook page as how this works out for you.
