The Silent Killer of Distance (fix #2)

Yesterday we learned that tension can be good for the backswing, but bad when we place a DEATH GRIP on the club… and yesterday we also learned Tension Release Drill #1 from Tom Watson. In case you missed it, you can read the whole article here:

Today, we will learn another drill designed by Tom Watson to relieve tension when you are about to play your next shot.

As we all know, competitive golf can be extremely stressful. Staring at the cut line, playing against stiff competition, even shooting for a personal best can all cause you to tense up.

When you begin to tense up, your breathing changes… your thoughts race… and your muscles tighten up. This leads to errant shots, loss of distance, and ultimately a higher score at the end of the day.

NOT GOOD!

Thankfully, we can learn from competitive golfers who play golf for a living to teach us techniques we can employ into our own games.

tomwatsonGood ole Tom Watson has another gem that I’ll share with you now…

Grip Tension Drill #2
“The second fix is to hold the club with the clubhead pointing up toward the sky. Let the club begin to fall through your fingers, then use just enough pressure to stop it. When you have that, lower the clubhead to horizontal. A little pressure will build in the last three fingers of your left hand and the middle and ring finger of your right hand, as Ben Hogan said there should be. That’s the amount of pressure you should attempt to swing with.” ~ Tom Watson

I can’t think of a more simple method to make you aware of tension and releasing tension at the same time.

However, there is more to the game than drills and tips like this if you want to add more distance to your game.

P.S. Two weeks have gone by with our Power and Distance Challenge test group. The early results from the group and in particular, Joe Connolly are VERY encouraging. Joe’s added 3-5 yards on his short irons, 5-10 yards on mid-irons, and a whopping 22 yards to his driver!

I would be pleased with these results at the END of the 42 days, but on day 14?!?! WOW.

Most likely, you won’t achieve the dramatic and fast yardage gains like our P&D Challenge Group has so far with drills alone…

… mainly because they are also using our custom designed power workouts, flexibility routines, and receiving personal one-on-one coaching… but, you can still add distance and improve your accuracy by adding what I callĀ Force Multipliers!
